While many contend that the need to fast ended in the Old Testament, we know of a truth, that prayer and fasting also occurs in the New Testament and was widely practiced.
(Luke 2:37).......................................Anna the prophetess "worshipped night and day fasting and praying" at the Temple
(Mark 2:18)......................................John the Baptist taught his disciples to fast
(Matthew 4:2)...................................Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights before His temptation by Satan
(Acts 13:2)......................................The church of Antioch fasted
(Acts 13:3)......................................Sent Paul and Barnabas off on their first missionary journey
(Acts 14:23).....................................Paul and Barnabas spent time in prayer and fasting for the appointment of elders in the churches

Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them awayfasting, lest they faint in the way.

And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.
